Nintendo Drops From List of Top 100 Brands
posted on by Karen Ressler
U.S.-based brand consultancy Interbrand released its Best Global Brands 2015 list on Monday and, for the first time since it started the annual list in 2001, did not include Nintendo.
Yuki Wada, CEO of Interbrand Japan, cited Nintendo's delay in entering the smartphone game market as the reason for the omission.
Nintendo had announced in March that it had developed a business alliance with mobile game developer DeNA to create new smartphone games, and it is working with Niantic to release the Pokémon GO smartphone app in 2016. Nintendo is planning to release five smartphone game titles by the end of March 2017, with the first slated to launch by the end of 2015.
Interbrand ranks the companies' brand values based on financial performance and on how much the brand contributes to these profits. Apple and Google topped the list for the third consecutive year. Japanese brands on the list include Toyota, Honda, Canon, Nissan, Sony and Panasonic.
