Japanese video game publisher Taito announced a new smartphone game tentatively titled Arkanoid vs Space Invaders at its press conference on Wednesday. The free game for iOS and Android is slated for release in Japan this winter.
In the action game, players control the Arkanoid mothership, the Vaus, to fight off invaders to the Arkanoid territory by deflecting their attacks. There are two parts: an "Invader Phase" and an "Arkanoid Phase." In the Invader Phase, players deflect the invaders' attacks and fill an energy gauge. Once the gauge is full the Arkanoid Phase begins, and players can attack and destroy the space invaders by firing an energy ball.
The game will include different stages, including stages where the invaders take on the appearance of Arkanoid blocks, get large, or are replace with 3D models.
Taito released the original Arkanoid arcade game in 1986 and the original Space Invaders game in 1978.
